Honoring Social Work Month
Evelyn Winters’ Journey in Healing & Advocacy
At the Charles J. Andrew Healing Centre, we are proud to recognize the dedication and impact of our social workers, who play a vital role in guiding individuals and families on their healing journeys. This National Social Work Month, we are honored to spotlight Evelyn Winters, our Clinical Program Manager, whose passion and commitment to social work continue to change lives.
A Calling to Help Others
Evelyn’s journey into social work was deeply inspired by her mother, who worked in social services in the 1970s. Watching her mother’s work sparked an early interest in helping others, and throughout her life, Evelyn found herself drawn to working with different organizations and supporting people in need.
Her path took a significant turn when she moved to Fredericton, NB, where she pursued a career assessment that led her to social work. Initially considering becoming a Lay Minister, Evelyn’s aspirations shifted in her second year of study, leading her to apply for the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program at St. Thomas University—a decision that shaped the course of her career. She proudly graduated in May 2002 and has been dedicated to serving communities ever since.
The Most Rewarding Part of Social Work
For Evelyn, the most fulfilling aspect of her job is being a part of people’s lives and witnessing their healing journeys. She deeply values the trust and openness shared by clients, understanding that each person’s story is unique and filled with resilience.
“Although at times it was difficult with traumatic experiences, I appreciate the trust of the clientele. I’ve met so many incredible people through my work, and I’ve had the privilege of traveling and learning from different cultures throughout my career.”
Seeing individuals reconnect with themselves, their culture, and their communities is what drives Evelyn every day.
Contributing to CJAHC’s Mission
At CJAHC, Evelyn ensures that programming aligns with traditional Indigenous values, beliefs, and practices. She works closely with both staff and clientele to integrate cultural healing, emphasizing reconnecting to the land as a key part of the recovery process.
“Reconnecting to the land and witnessing the outcome of their healing journey is an incredibly rewarding experience.”
Her dedication to Indigenous-led healing supports CJAHC’s mission to empower individuals and families, helping them heal through both clinical and cultural approaches.
A Personal Reflection: A Journey of Healing
Evelyn’s journey as a social worker is deeply intertwined with her personal healing. She openly shares that her own path to recovery has led to some of the most valuable and memorable experiences of her life.
This year, on February 25, 2025, she proudly celebrated 29 years of continuous sobriety—a powerful testament to the strength of recovery and resilience.
“My sobriety shows that you can make your dreams and goals come true. Be true to yourself, work hard on your healing journey, and you will reach the stars.”
A Message of Gratitude
Evelyn’s unwavering commitment to healing and advocacy has left a lasting impact on many lives. As we celebrate National Social Work Month, we extend our deepest gratitude to Evelyn Winters and all social workers who dedicate themselves to supporting, uplifting, and guiding individuals on their journeys to wellness.
Thank you—Nakummek!
